For 30 years, thousands of REEF volunteer scuba divers have been recording every shark and ray they see (and don't see) on Caribbean reefs. One dive at a time, one survey at a time, they've built a dataset spanning the entire Caribbean basin across three decades.

With your help, we want to put the data to work. At @scripps_ocean we're excited to conduct population trend analyses for five key species - Caribbean Reef Sharks, Atlantic Nurse Sharks, Southern Stingrays, Yellow Stingrays, and Whitespotted Eagle Rays - across more than ten countries.

Our goal is to make results available for @iucnshark Red List assessments, test whether Caribbean shark sanctuaries are actually delivering, and give governments the understanding they need to responsibly manage their shark and ray populations.

This project was built on small contributions by citizen science SCUBA divers adding up over many years. Now we're asking you to do the same, returning to the crowdfunding model that supported Brendan's master's research over a decade ago. A few dollars can turn diver observations into conservation action.

🦈 Shark finning bans sound straightforward, but the reality is more complicated. Dr. Shelley Clarke breaks down why the same policy can work differently depending on where you are.

In nearshore fisheries, the whole shark often gets used — meat goes into fish cakes, fins get sold, nothing is wasted. Sharks are often a desirable bycatch... not the target, but a valuable catch nonetheless. A finning ban doesn't change much here because fishers are already keeping the whole animal. Offshore, it's a different story. Tuna is the target, shark carcasses take up freezer space, and finning bans can actually reduce the incentive to keep sharks at all.

Transshipment complicates the picture offshore. When vessels can offload their catch at sea and keep fishing, they have no reason to release anything unless required by law. Everything stays on board, then the freezer gets emptied, and catch data can disappear in the process. Without better monitoring of what's happening on the high seas, even good regulations lose their teeth.

You or your pets could be eating shark without knowing it...

In Japan, hanpen — a common fish cake served even at breakfast — is often made from shark, but it's rarely labeled that way. Shark gets blended into processed seafood products under generic names, making it nearly invisible to consumers.

Ironically, pet food is often more transparent there. Shark shows up on ingredient labels for dog treats in Japan, whereas in the US it is far less clear when shark is in pet food or cosmetics, although research shows that it sometimes is.

Better labeling and traceability in markets would go a long way toward helping consumers understand what they're actually buying, empowering them to make responsible choices.

📊 How many sharks of a given species are we actually catching?

We don't really know. Dr. Shelley Clarke explains that global catch statistics for sharks are so muddled that good fisheries management is challenging from the start.

Sharks frequently get lumped into broad, undifferentiated categories with no species-level breakdown. Right now, ~25% of all shark, ray, and chimaera catch is reported as just "sharks, rays and chimeras." That's over 1,200 species in one bucket... some can handle fishing pressure and others are critically endangered. That is a dangerous combination!
